Let’s start this off with a bit of history about my workflow. Normally, for ease of transportation and the fact that I use multiple computers to develop sites and software, I use a flash drive to carry everything around. I do make nightly backups of this drive on my home computer (and regular backups to an external drive that also contains website and database backups) so everything is pretty safe and current.
I use a OCZ Roadster. USB drives just don’t get any smaller than this puppy as it’s basically just the USB connector with a flip top…very cool.
Anyway, I had my laptop with me over the vacation week and this flash drive thinking I’d do some work…and I did. I finished up a couple feature additions and bug fixes…and was partially finished with a synonymizer. It’s always nice to be able to set up a portable AMP server (using WAMP) and hack out some code wherever and whenever I want to.
On the way home, somewhere between Wisconsin and New York, however, something unfortunate happened. I lost my flash drive.
It’s probably ground to bits beneath the tires of the trucks at one of the I-80 rest stops (at least I hope it is, rather than being dissected by someone who knows about websites and PHP code).
While I won’t say I lost an entire week’s worth of work, there was a good amount of new stuff implemented that will take time and motivation to add. And it was a heck of a lot more efficient to work when you have parents willing and able to take care of young children.
Anyway, yeah, slight set back…maybe not panic level, but distressing and depressing enough. Thankfully, though, I believe in backups!
